FAQ
Absolutely. In fact, most of my clients are beginners! There is no “gatekeeping” here—I love teaching the basics, from how to hold the rod to landing your first trout. The Madison is a forgiving place to learn, and we’ll take it at your pace.
I typically like to meet at 8:00 AM. This gets us to the boat ramp and on the water just as the river is waking up. However, we can adjust the start time based on the season or your schedule—if the “trico” hatch is happening early or you want to sleep in, just let me know.
I provide the rods, reels, flies, and a solid lunch (for full-day trips). You just need to bring:
– A valid Montana Fishing License (you can buy this online).
– Polarized sunglasses (essential for seeing fish and eye protection).
– A brimmed hat and sunscreen.
– Layers! Montana weather can swing 40 degrees in a single afternoon.
Yes! While I am an independent guide, I work closely with a trusted circle of veteran local guides. If you have a group of four or more, I can coordinate additional boats so your whole party can experience the river together.
I’m a big believer in “going where the fish are.” I’ll choose the specific stretch of the Upper or Lower Madison based on current water temperatures, bug activity, and your skill level. If you have your heart set on a specific scenic stretch like Mac to Varney, just say the word!
